"Cold chain" sounds as though every peptide must stay refrigerated from warehouse to lab. For freeze-dried powder that is not the case, and that is not a concession but chemistry. This guide sets out what actually degrades a peptide and what you practically do about it.
The cold chain matters for solutions, not for dry powder: without water, hydrolysis cannot split the peptide bond. What you do want to limit is prolonged heat, light, oxidation and repeated thawing — plus condensation when opening a cold vial.
What a cold chain actually is
A cold chain is a transport and storage route that stays within a temperature range from end to end, with control at every handover. That is essential for products that decompose quickly at room temperature — vaccines, many biological medicines, peptides in solution.

What actually degrades a peptide
Temperature is one factor among several, and usually not the first thing that goes wrong. Water tops the list: it is the reactant in the hydrolysis that splits the peptide bond. Next comes oxidation, to which sulphur-containing and aromatic amino acids are sensitive. Light can accelerate those reactions.
And then there is a mechanical mechanism: repeated freezing and thawing. Every cycle drives the solution through phases where components become temporarily highly concentrated. At low concentrations, adsorption to the glass plays a part too — substance disappears without anything decomposing.
What you practically do
Keep dry powder cold and dark, let a cold vial warm up before opening it, and split a solution into portions. That point about warming up is the one most often skipped and the most concrete: a cold vial attracts condensation as soon as air reaches it, and that introduces water to a product it was explicitly removed from.

What a transport excursion does and does not mean
A parcel that arrives warm is not proof of a degraded product, and a parcel that arrives cool is not proof of the opposite. For dry powder, a short period at ambient temperature is exactly the scenario that form was chosen for. Visible damage or a broken vial is another story: report it within 48 hours with photographs, as set out in the returns and refund policy.
What does objectively pin a batch down is the measurement made in the lab on receipt: identity and purity, tied to the lot number. Check those via verify a lot number; our thresholds are on quality standards.

Do research peptides have to be shipped cold?
Lyophilised powder does not. Without water, hydrolysis cannot split the peptide bond, which makes the dry product stable enough for transport at ambient temperature. Peptides in solution are a different matter: those do belong refrigerated.
My parcel arrived warm. Is the product now worthless?
Not automatically. A freeze-dried peptide tolerates a short period at ambient temperature; that is exactly why it is shipped in that form. What you do want to avoid is prolonged heat, direct sunlight, and repeated thawing and refreezing.
Why should a vial reach room temperature before you open it?
Because a cold vial attracts condensation as soon as it is open. That brings in precisely what you want to keep out — water — to a dry powder. So let the vial warm up first, then open it.
Why is repeated freezing and thawing harmful?
Every cycle takes the peptide through the phases where it is most vulnerable and temporarily concentrates dissolved substances. So split a solution into portions and thaw one portion at a time instead of the whole stock.
